On January 26, 2026, as the Chinese Lunar New Year of the Horse approached, Lumbini Confucius Classroom successfully organized the “Year of the Horse Spring Festival Carnival” at its teaching center, Ashoka College. The event brought together students and teachers for a joyful celebration filled with Chinese cultural experiences, performances, traditional games, and festive activities.
The opening ceremony featured speeches by the Principal of Ashoka College, Venerable Naranda Thero, and Ms. Wang Fei, Chinese Director of Lumbini Confucius Classroom. Both speakers extended New Year greetings to students and teachers while emphasizing the importance of cultural exchange in strengthening the friendship between China and Sri Lanka and broadening students’ international perspectives.
The celebration began with a vibrant cultural performance segment that energized the audience. Students enjoyed powerful Chinese martial arts demonstrations showcasing strength and discipline, followed by graceful Tai Chi performances reflecting harmony and balance in traditional Chinese philosophy.
Musical performances also brought excitement to the event. Cheerful Chinese songs such as Peach Blossoms Bloom captured the joyful spirit of spring and the New Year, while classic melodies created a lively and festive atmosphere throughout the school grounds.
Students further impressed the audience with elegant Chinese classical dance performances inspired by traditional Chinese culture, alongside energetic and colorful Sri Lankan traditional dances. The combination of Chinese and Sri Lankan artistic performances beautifully symbolized cultural harmony and friendship between the two countries.
Following the stage performances, students participated in a variety of interactive Chinese New Year cultural activities set up across the campus. These activity booths quickly became one of the highlights of the event.
Popular traditional games included:
- Ring Toss Challenges
- Traditional Chinese Pitch-Pot Games
- Chinese Calligraphy Writing
- Creative Horse Painting Activities
- Peanut Picking with Chopsticks Competitions
Students and teachers moved from booth to booth collecting special stamps by completing games and activities. Participants later exchanged these stamps for Chinese-themed souvenirs such as traditional knot decorations and opera-mask keychains.
One of the most memorable parts of the celebration was the opportunity for students and teachers to enjoy traditional Chinese dumplings together. During the session, teachers from Lumbini Confucius Classroom explained the cultural significance of dumplings in Chinese New Year traditions, where they symbolize reunion, happiness, and good fortune.
Students shared positive feedback after the event. One student expressed that the Chinese Day celebration was one of the most memorable experiences of her school life, providing opportunities to experience Chinese culture and showcase student talents in a fun and meaningful environment.
Teachers also highlighted the event as a valuable cultural experience that strengthened cultural understanding and student engagement.
Through interactive activities, artistic performances, and traditional food experiences, the Spring Festival Carnival provided Sri Lankan students with a meaningful introduction to Chinese New Year traditions and Chinese culture. The event not only enriched students’ extracurricular experiences but also further strengthened cultural ties and friendship between China and Sri Lanka.
