On April 25, Lumbini Confucius Classroom was invited to participate in the “International Tai Chi Day” promotion event held at Galle Face Green, organized jointly by the Embassy of China in Sri Lanka, the Ministry of Youth and Sports of Sri Lanka, and the Western Provincial Council. The event brought together more than 500 Tai Chi enthusiasts from across Sri Lanka to celebrate and experience the beauty of traditional Chinese culture.

The atmosphere at the event was vibrant and energetic as various Tai Chi groups from around the country showcased a wide range of Tai Chi performances and traditional wellness practices. As an invited institution, Lumbini Confucius Classroom proudly presented a special performance of Wu Qin Xi (Five-Animal Exercises), one of China’s most famous traditional health-preservation practices.

The performers skillfully demonstrated the movements inspired by the tiger, deer, bear, monkey, and bird, highlighting the harmony between physical movement and inner spirit — a core principle of traditional Chinese wellness culture. Their graceful and expressive performance received enthusiastic applause and high praise from the audience.

The motion should be rooted in the feet, released through the legs, controlled by the waist, and manifested through the fingers.

Many spectators commented that the performance was both visually captivating and deeply meaningful, while also promoting physical and mental well-being. The Embassy of China in Sri Lanka also highly appreciated the professional presentation by Lumbini Confucius Classroom, noting that it added a unique highlight to the event and further strengthened cultural exchange between China and Sri Lanka.

During the event, Chinese Ambassador to Sri Lanka, Qi Zhenhong, stated that on November 5, 2025, the 43rd session of the UNESCO General Conference officially designated March 21 as “International Tai Chi Day.” He emphasized that this recognition reflects the growing global appreciation of Tai Chi as an important part of humanity’s shared cultural heritage.

Ambassador Qi also highlighted that the event theme, “Harmony Between All Things,” reflects the essence of Tai Chi philosophy and aligns with the principles of peaceful development and mutual cooperation promoted by China in global cultural exchange.

He further announced that Lumbini Confucius Classroom will soon launch Tai Chi classes through its Chinese Cultural Classroom, offering Tai Chi training opportunities for the Sri Lankan public. In addition, Tai Chi sessions will also be included in cultural training programs for local Chinese language teachers in Sri Lanka, helping deepen their understanding of Chinese traditional culture.

Participation in this International Tai Chi Day event further enhanced the influence of Lumbini Confucius Classroom in Sri Lanka and contributed positively to the promotion of traditional Chinese culture and China–Sri Lanka cultural friendship.

Lumbini Confucius Classroom remains committed to organizing diverse cultural activities that strengthen people-to-people connections and encourage mutual understanding between Sri Lanka and China.
