On February 27, 2026, the 2026 “Happy Spring Festival” Temple Fair grandly opened at Port City Food Port in Colombo. The event was held under the guidance of the Embassy of China in Sri Lanka and jointly organized by the China Cultural Center in Sri Lanka, the Western Provincial Council of Sri Lanka, Colombo Port City Development Co., Ltd., the Department of Culture, Radio, Television and Tourism of Zhejiang Province, and the Sri Lanka Chinese Association.
As a co-organizer of the event, Lumbini Confucius Classroom actively participated in the organization and cultural activities of the festival, further strengthening cultural exchange and friendship between Sri Lanka and China.
The temple fair offered Sri Lankan visitors and the Chinese community in Sri Lanka an immersive experience of traditional Chinese New Year celebrations. Using intangible cultural heritage as a bridge for cultural understanding, the event showcased the richness and beauty of Chinese traditions while promoting people-to-people connections between the two countries.
A special cultural team from Zhejiang Province presented a variety of traditional Chinese intangible cultural heritage performances and exhibitions. Visitors enjoyed demonstrations of woodblock New Year paintings, rice dough art, sugar painting, and the famous Xieshi lantern art, whose colorful and intricate designs illuminated the evening atmosphere beautifully.
Traditional Chinese tea ceremonies and puppet shows also attracted large audiences, allowing visitors to experience the depth and elegance of Chinese culture up close.
The lively festival atmosphere was further enhanced by performances featuring Zhejiang-style Wuju opera alongside traditional Sri Lankan dances, creating a vibrant cultural fusion on stage.
Teacher Huang Ao from Lumbini Confucius Classroom served as the event host, bringing warmth and energy to the celebration with engaging and lively presentation skills. In addition, student Ming Hui performed a traditional Chinese Kuaiban (rhythmic storytelling with bamboo clappers), sharing Chinese stories through rhythmic and energetic performance that captivated the audience and added a joyful festive spirit to the evening.
Behind the scenes, teachers from Lumbini Confucius Classroom played an important role in welcoming VIP guests with traditional flower garlands and assisting performers throughout the event. They carefully coordinated backstage arrangements, stage transitions, and audience management, ensuring the smooth and successful flow of the performances.
At the Zhejiang Intangible Cultural Heritage Experience Zone, teachers from the classroom warmly guided participants through tea appreciation, tea-making, traditional printing techniques, and other hands-on cultural activities. These interactive experiences allowed local visitors to gain a deeper understanding of traditional Chinese arts and craftsmanship.
The successful co-organization of the 2026 “Happy Spring Festival” Temple Fair highlighted the achievements of Lumbini Confucius Classroom in Chinese language education and cultural promotion in Sri Lanka. More importantly, it reflected the classroom’s continued commitment to promoting friendship, cultural understanding, and educational exchange between Sri Lanka and China.
